Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Radiology Departments

Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is responsible for Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw General Hospital.

Where
they were

The CT and X- Ray departments at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw General Hospital have undergone systems and equipment upgrades in recent years as part of budgeted funding or charitable donations.

Where they
wanted to be

With existing surroundings feeling 'cold' and 'clinical', the Radiology team wanted a warmer welcoming environment for patients attending appointments in these departments.

The
Result

A more relaxed, warmer feeling to the CT Suite and a vibrant, modern update to the X-ray departments.

How we got there

In-Depth Understanding

Once appointed as the successful agency to deliver the interior design project for the CT Suite development, Keane met with the department leads to get a thorough understanding of not only the logistic, pragmatic side of the project, but also the emotional nature of the work – when patients are visiting the CT department, it is often an anxious time for them; the designs would need to be sensitive to the situation and environment.

3D Visualisation

Keane researched and investigated potential ideas, being mindful of constraints such as infection control processes as well as the practicalities of all the equipment requirements within the CT Suite and X-Ray Departments. Following the research phase on each project, a number of concepts were created and along with 'mood boards' with colour pallets and potential materials. These concepts were visualised in 3D and presented to the team.

For each individual project, a different concept was chosen and worked up to final artwork ready for application and installation.

Application in live environment

Due to all areas of the hospitals still being in operation prior to installation, Keane needed to be mindful of the live environment and liaise frequently with the department leads to manage the installation process to cause minimal disruption to the NHS services. Flexibilty on dates and working hours was required in order to successfully install the final artwork.

Visually Appealing yet Practical

Working in collaboration with partner printers for the large format print, site visits took place to refine the scope of the projects and ensure that the final print would meet all the requirements of a clinical environment, taking into consideration the placement of the medical equipment and any impact this would have on the overall design as well as meeting infection control protocols. At the same time as ensuring the practial elements were met, it was imperative that the final designs worked to achieve the individual objectives of each project.

For the CT Suites, the calming, uplifting design starts in the waiting room and flows throughout the department, into the changing cubicles and corridor and across both CT Suites to bring a cohesive, fluid feel to the area. The main design features some subtle elements including a dragonfly as a nod to the charitable funding body and can also be used as a distraction technique with searching out other key elements.

In X-Ray, the design is eye catching and uplifting, moving away from the 'sterile' feel to the department. There is a bright, welcoming feel for patients and colleagues alike and whilst demonstrating a clean and safe environment, patients can experience a relaxed feeling with an alternative focus.
