The Future of PPC: How AI Search Is Changing Paid Visibility

AI is becoming part of the decision-making process

We’re all familiar enough with AI now. Whether we are using it to plan meals, choose what to watch next, compare products or make everyday decisions, AI has quickly become part of daily life.

And because of that, it has started to earn our trust.

For many people, AI is no longer just a novelty, it is becoming a research tool. We ask it questions, compare options, follow up with more detail and use the answers to help decide what to do next.

In many ways, this is not that different from what we have always done. We check reviews, ask for recommendations, browse forums and compare opinions before making a decision. The difference now is that AI can bring much of that information together in one place, within a few short seconds.

That trust is powerful. Whether it is always deserved is another conversation, but the perception matters. When users start relying on AI to research, compare and make decisions, that behaviour is hard to switch off.

Why AI ads could be so powerful

Now, imagine being able to place your business in front of someone at the exact point they are asking for advice, comparing their options and being guided towards a decision.

That is what makes paid advertising within AI search so powerful.

Unlike traditional search, where someone might type a short keyword and scan through a list of results, AI-led platforms are built around conversation. Users can explain what they need, ask follow-up questions, compare solutions and receive a more complete answer in one place.

This matters because the user may already be much further along the decision-making process.

By the time someone sees an ad within an AI-led experience, they may have already explained their problem, narrowed down what they are looking for and been educated on their options. The platform has helped them move from a broad question to a more specific need. That creates a very different type of intent.

For advertisers, this could be incredibly valuable. Ads are no longer just appearing beside a search result. They could appear within the journey itself, at the moment a user is actively making sense of their options and looking for the right product, service or provider.

The major platforms are already moving

Google is already testing new ad formats within AI Mode, including Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers. Microsoft says ads can now appear across Copilot Search and Copilot Answers, as well as Bing. ChatGPT has also moved beyond initial testing, with OpenAI Ads Manager Beta now available in the UK. It is still early, and the platform is continuing to evolve, but advertisers can now create, launch and manage campaigns for ChatGPT Ads through the beta platform.

AI search changes the context of advertising

The bigger point is this: AI search changes the context in which ads are seen.

A user may not simply search for “family solicitor near me” or “best CRM system”. They may ask, “What should I look for when choosing a solicitor after a separation?” or “Which CRM would suit a small business with a growing sales team?” In those moments, the user is not just browsing - they are explaining their situation, receiving guidance and moving closer to a decision.

If paid ads can appear naturally within that process, the value becomes obvious. Your business is not just showing up when someone searches. It is showing up when someone is being guided towards what to do next.

The click is only part of the journey

This also means businesses may need to think differently about what happens after the click. Someone arriving from an AI-led ad may already understand the basics. They may not need a generic landing page that explains the problem from scratch. They may need reassurance, proof, clear next steps and a page that quickly confirms why your business is the right choice.

This is still early, but it is unlikely to be a passing trend. If anything, it suggests paid advertising will become more closely connected to AI-led search experiences, where visibility is influenced not only by keywords, but by relevance, trust, content quality and clear conversion signals.

For businesses, that means the advert is only part of the picture. Campaigns, landing pages and wider website content need to clearly explain what you offer, who you help, why you can be trusted and what action a customer should take next.
